From Rovaniemi you can find hundreds of outdoor destinations: lean-tos, fireplaces and trails ranging from short evening walks to longer hikes!
Kuninkaanlaavu (King’s lean-to) is located 8 kilometres from Rovaniemi city centrum. Car can be parked on the side of the Ounasjoen itäpuolentie, on the side of Santavaarantie or on the top of the hill, which makes it a perfect place to spend your evenings at. You can choose to walk a little bit more in the Lappish views or just come and grill sausages in great views. By choosing easier trails you can take the little ones with you.
Because of the option of driving your car 300 metres from the lean-to, Kuninkaanlaavu is the perfect place for night time photography. Whether you are shooting the milky way or northern lights, the light pollution of the city does not reach this far. As the views open to North-West the rocky terrain and twisty Ounasjoki –river please also the eye not only the lens of the camera. You can come here easily to relax.
From terrain map you can find trails close to the lean-to, or as we usually do: get out of the car and head to the top. At this location the terrain is easy to hike also outside the trails.

Rovaniemeltä löytyy satoja retkeilykohteita: laavuja ja nuotiopaikkoja ja reittejä pidemmistä vaelluksista aina iltalenkeille asti!
Kuninkaanlaavu löytyy Santavaarasta noin kahdeksan kilometrin päästä Rovaniemen keskustasta. Auton pystyy jättämään joko Ounasjoen itäpuolentien varteen, Santavaarantien varteen tai ajaa huipulle, soranottopaikalle. Tämä on siis täydellinen paikka arki-illan viettoon, halusit sitten pidemmän tai lyhyemmän kävelyn lappilaisessa maastossa tai vain paikan makkaran paistolle hienoissa maisemissa. Sopii myös perheen pienimmille.
Koska autolla pääsee ajamaan noin 300 metrin päähän itse laavusta, soveltuu Kuninkaanlaavu täydellisesti myös tähtitaivas- ja revontulikuvaukseen. Kaupungin valosaaste ei ylety laavulle asti ja maisemat avautuvat nätisti luoteeseen päin. Kallioinen laavun edusta ja mutkitteleva Ounasjoki hellivät kameran lisäksi myös vaeltajan silmää. Tänne on helppo tulla rauhoittumaan.
Maastokartasta voi kätevästi katsoa laavunläheiset polut tai kuten meillä on tapana tehdä: noustaan autosta ja lähdetään mutu-tuntumalla kävelemään kohti huippua. Kankainen metsä tekee kävelystä helppoa myös merkittyjen polkujen ulkopuolella.
