Located to Northern Lapland is Vätsäri Wilderness area. That’s where I’ve been the last week.
As I told about my preparations and running around packing the first aid kit, turns out that less from that kit was needed on this trip. Luckily.
Vätsäri is a good place to hike due to the drinkable water from almost every lake and river there is. We only carried one liter of water at a time. On the warmest days (Monday to Wednesday) one would have maybe needed half a liter more, but none of us got dehydrated, though I got overheated one day. Yes, I had drank enough water and yes, I did have a hat on.
The terrain in Vätsäri seemed to be quite easy, also for the dogs. As we only had six days for our hike, we decided not to clime on any fjelds but to hike valleys instead. If you depart from the marked road you will find yourself from blockfields that are hard to cross with 15 extra kilos in your backpack.
Due to the heatwave in Lapland all of the wilderness area was so dry that the normally swampy places did not even wet your feet if you walked without shoes, making our river crossings a lot easier that what they might be on a regular summer.
What I had in my first aid kit:
- Bandaids
- Rolled gauze
- Blister bandaids
- Cloth tape
- Disinfectant towels
- Antihistamine
- Painkillers
- Diarrhea medicine
- Magnesium
- Medicine for snake bite (kyypakkaus)
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- Cotton Swabs
- Vaseline
- Hydrocortisone
What I had for our dog:
- Rolled gauze
- Medicine for snake bite (kyypakkaus)
- Resin cream (for bug bites & paws)
- AniDes – disinfectant spray
- Aptus Nutrisal – complementary feed for maintaining fluid balance
- Virbac Nutri-plus gel – complementary feed for recovery
